Most of us want a clean car, but there are lots of ways to get one: automatic car washes at the supermarket, hand car washes on retail parks, doing it yourself on the drive, or booking a mobile valet. So what’s the difference, and which is best for you?

Automatic car washes

Automatic car washes, the drive-through type with big spinning brushes, are quick and cheap. But they have drawbacks:

  • Swirl marks. Brushes can trap grit from previous cars and drag it across your paintwork, creating fine circular scratches that dull the finish over time, especially on dark cars.
  • Missed areas. Brushes can’t reach every curve, so wheels, door shuts, rear valances and the areas around number plates are often left dirty.
  • Harsh chemicals. Some use strong detergents to make up for the short contact time, which can strip wax and protection.
  • No interior clean. You’ll still need to vacuum and wipe the inside yourself.

Hand car washes

Hand car washes are a step up in reach, but quality varies enormously. When they’re busy, the same dirty mitts and buckets may be used on car after car, and there’s often little time for detail. Interior cleaning is usually limited to a quick vacuum.

What is mobile car valeting?

A valet is a thorough, detailed clean of your car, inside and out, carried out by hand. A mobile valet comes to you, at home or at work, and brings its own water, power and equipment.

A typical full valet includes:

  • Snow foam pre-wash to loosen dirt before the car is touched
  • Two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo to reduce the risk of scratches
  • Dedicated cleaning of wheels, tyres and arches
  • Door shuts and sills
  • Exterior glass
  • Full interior vacuum, including seats, footwells and boot
  • Dashboard, console and door cards cleaned
  • Seats and carpets shampooed, or leather cleaned and conditioned
  • Interior glass cleaned streak-free

The key differences

Paintwork care

Valeters use soft wash mitts, clean water, pH-neutral products and safe drying methods, reducing the risk of swirl marks. Over time, that keeps your car looking newer and can help protect its value.

Interior cleaning

This is where valeting really stands out. Car washes rarely do more than a quick hoover. A valet tackles stains on seats, ground-in dirt in carpets, sticky cup holders, dusty vents and pet hair. For family cars, dog owners and anyone who’s been to the beach, it makes a huge difference.

Convenience

With mobile valeting, you don’t queue or wait around. Your car is cleaned on your driveway while you’re at home, or in your workplace car park while you’re at work.

Cost

Automatic car washes are cheaper per visit, but they don’t do the same job. A regular maintenance valet every few weeks, with an occasional full valet, keeps a car in great condition and can be very good value.

When to book a full valet

  • Before selling your car, to make the best impression on buyers
  • Before returning a lease car, to reduce the risk of charges
  • After the winter, to remove road salt and grime
  • After a beach holiday or a camping trip
  • When you’ve bought a used car and want a fresh start
  • If you have pets, to remove hair and odours

Coastal car care

In Weston-super-Mare and along the coast, salt in the air and sand on the beach can be hard on cars. Salt speeds up corrosion, particularly on the underside and around wheel arches, and sand gets into every footwell. Regular washing and interior cleaning help protect your car, especially in winter when gritted roads add more salt.
